Meanwhile, a third-party candidate is trying the waters. Kevin Zeese formed an exploratory committee this week to seek to “unite multiple third parties behind a campaign for peace, justice and democracy.
“We need an economy for the people, where all Americans share the wealth and each has a stake in the sensible growth of our economy,” said Zeese. “Neither major party faces these issues because doing so is against the interests of the monied elite who fund their campaigns.”
Zeese, of Takoma Park, is founder, director or president of six grass-roots activist organizations: Democracy Rising (www.DemocracyRising.US), working to end the Iraq War and occupation; Vote Trust USA (www.VoteTrustUSA.org); TrueVoteMD.org; Common Sense for Drug Policy (www.csdp.org); Treatment Not Incarceration Coalition in Maryland (www.TreatNotJail.org); and the Downing Street Coalition.
A 1980 graduate of George Washington University Law School, he was press secretary in Ralph Nader’s 2004 presidential campaign.
His 34-person exploratory committee includes people from a variety of alternative parties as well as the anti-war, pro-democracy, environmental and justice movements. Republicans and Democrats are also represented, he says.
