CARDIN BACKS OUT OF CHARLES COUNTY NAACP DEBATE AT LAST MINUTE PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Thursday, 26 October 2006
Montgomery County, MD:  U.S. Senate candidate Kevin Zeese criticized Rep. Ben Cardin for his last minute cancellation at an NAACP debate in Charles County tonight. "Rep. Cardin is already having trouble holding on to the African American vote and this decision to drop out of an NAACP debate will only make that problem worse. This may be suicidal to his campaign. Cardin has made a decision that not appearing posed less risk than appearing that may be a mistaken calculation.  Many observers of the first two debates between Steele, Cardin and Zeese found Cardin showing poorly in each."

"Cardin has been trying to run away from his record of votes and present himself as a different type of candidate than he really is.  He pretends to be anti-war, while voting against exit strategy, in favor of staying the course and for more than $320 billion in funding.  He pretends to be pro-civil liberties but votes consistently for the Patriot Act, even the version filibustered by the Senate. He says he challenges the pharmaceutical companies but has voted twice against allowing the importation of pharmaceuticals that are one-third the cost of the drugs in the U.S. And, he claims to favor health care for all but refuses to challenge the health insurance industry and advocate for a single payer system, the only way health care for all has been achieved anywhere in the world. His record and rhetoric don't match," commented Zeese.

Kevin Zeese and Michael Steele will appear at the event.  "I look forward to highlighting my differences with Michael Steele on the war in Iraq, a military attack on Iran, solving the health care crisis, raising wages for American workers and ensuring that workers keep more of their income. No doubt, Cardin's absence will leave him at a disadvantage when his record is discussed," said Zeese. "This mistake may show voters that the only way to beat Steele is to abandon Cardin and vote for the only candidate that has not sold out to the special interests."

Rep. Cardin has claimed that he will bring change to Washington, despite being in Washington for two decades, and that he will challenge the special interests, despite being the largest recipient of special interest money in Maryland. "It is sad to see that in order to run away from his record, Mr. Cardin is running away from a debate.  What could be more important than showing voters the differences between the three candidates by participating in a public debate?" asked Zeese.
