My campaign encourages an open dialogue about the relationship between
Israel and the United States. This dialogue should include
bringing to the United States, Palestinian and Israeli advocates for
peace. We should also discuss modifying our support for Israel so the
United States is not participating in Israel's widespread human rights
abuses or violations of UN resolutions.
Of course, Palestinians must be criticized if they condone terrorism
against Israelis.
By the same token, Americans should not be labeled anti-Semitic for
criticizing the actions of the Israeli government. Such
name-calling prevents rational discourse.
Currently the U.S. provides Israel, a country the size of New Jersey,
with as much foreign aid as we provide to all of Sub-Saharan Africa,
Latin America and the Caribbean combined. The U.S. provides Israel with
20% of its military budget. Thus, when Israel uses its military,
kills civilians, occupies Arab or Palestinian territory, the U.S. is
complicit. This is not in the interests of U.S. security, indeed
it is a major factor in undermining the security of all Americans.
Our one-sided relationship with Israel is one that we don’t discuss
very much in politics. We need to have an honest discussion about
that. Only then can this country avoid repeating the policy
mistakes of the past and present.
