Zeese Writes Cardin and Steele Urges Series of Three-Candidate Debates PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Tuesday, 19 September 2006
U.S. Senate candidate Kevin Zeese is urging the Cardin and Steele campaigns to participate in a series of three-candidate debates.  Zeese is an advocate of inclusive debates where all ballot-approved candidates are included as debate sponsors and the media should not decide elections, voters should.

Zeese has already been invited to several debates, including the very important NAACP debate on October 28th in Baltimore.  This campaign will see something unique in Maryland history -- the first three-candidate debates in a statewide race. Below is a letter Kevin Zeese sent to Rep. Cardin and Lt. Gov. Steele.

Dear Mssrs. Cardin and Steele:

I would like to congratulate you both on your victories in Tuesday’s primaries.

I look forward to a spirited general election campaign with a wide range of new ideas brought to the table for the voters to consider.  I was pleased to receive Lt. Governor Steele’s letter on September 13th, 2006 suggesting that all ballot approved candidates be included in the debates.  I strongly agree that Maryland voters deserve no less.

I was also pleased to hear that Congressman Cardin was telling voters at the Takoma Park Folk Festival this past weekend that he is willing to participate in three-way debates as well.

Further, the League of Women Voters and the NAACP among other respected civic organizations are committed to inclusive three-way debates.

Open debates are an important way to demonstrate our respect for Maryland voters and our shared commitment to election excellence.  This is sorely needed now, especially in the wake of the serious voting system disruptions on Primary Day, and the conflicts over early voting and the lack of voter-verified paper ballots.

We can help restore Maryland’s faith and pride in our democracy.

The voters of Maryland would be best served by a series of televised debates over the next seven weeks to provide a full airing of our views before the electorate.

Hopefully, we can move forward quickly to schedule this debate series.

I look forward to a campaign that serves the voters and is a model for the nation.

Sincerely,

Kevin Zeese
