Ehrlich and Zeese on Elections PDF  | Print |  E-mail

It's a rare day when Republican Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. and third party Senate candidate Kevin Zeese see eye to eye on anything.

That happened yesterday, when within a matter of hours both politicians released missives fretting over the reliability of the Diebold Election Systems touch-screen voting machines used across Maryland.

In an afternoon new release, Zeese declared, "The Board of Elections should come clean on the serious problems Maryland has had with the Diebold election system, rather than hiding the facts from legislators and the public."

A short time later, Ehrlich released a letter he penned to the elections board in which he, for the first time, called for a paper trail to back up the electronic machines. "There are a lot of questions and not very satisfactory answers," he said. "Maryland is not prepared to conduct an election."

Ehrlich also took aim at a new law, approved by the Democrat-controlled legislature over his veto, that would allow voting to begin a week before election day. He asked the elections board to postpone such an innovation until at least 2008. Ehrlich is up for re-election this November.
