Neal Pierce makes important points below about the direction of elections in America -- less and less confidence among voters as administration becomes more and more partisan and less and less transparent. I would add that this trend will increase as election administration becomes more and more corporatized.
We are seeing in Maryland all of these trends under the "leadership" of Linda Lamone. For example, the state is having a very hard time recruiting election judges as the election system becomes more complex, harder to understand and impossible to have confidence in. Diebold technicians are becoming more important than election judges. No doubt the solution from the Lamone's of the world will be to completely privatize elections -- do away with the quaint notion of election judges and replace them corporate judges -- hired, no doubt for much more than the $100 per day we pay today. This will just increase the cycle of loss of faith in elections -- for good reason, corporations with business before the state should not control election administration. This should be a basic function of government, not private interests. Write Comment (0 Comments) |

U.S. Senate candidate Kevin Zeese is urging the Cardin and Steele campaigns to participate in a series of three-candidate debates. Zeese is an advocate of inclusive debates where all ballot-approved candidates are included as debate sponsors and the media should not decide elections, voters should.
Zeese has already been invited to several debates, including the very important NAACP debate on October 28th in Baltimore. This campaign will see something unique in Maryland history -- the first three-candidate debates in a statewide race. Below is a letter Kevin Zeese sent to Rep. Cardin and Lt. Gov. Steele.

It is impossible to have confidence in the vote count in the Busby/Bilbray election when the security of the electronic voting machines was so lax, e.g. allowing judges to take machines home the night before, when combined with the well documented ease of manipulating the machines in ways that could effect the vote count by itself raises serious doubts about the accuracy of the vote count. Election officials in California and throughout the country know that the machines used include illegal interpreted code that allow for manipulation of election results. The security holes in these machines allow for software to be changed in ways that could effect the vote counting in a matter of minutes, and yet these machines were without security for many hours. In order for this election to be accepted as legitimate there must be a full, transparent hand recount of the voter verified paper ballots. Thankfully, California -- unlike my home state of Maryland, requires a voter verified paper ballot -- but there is no use to this ballot if it is not used when doubts are raised. The resistance to this recount only adds to the lack of confidence in the election results. This is an issue of national importance as Americans are losing confidence in the basis of U.S. democracy -- ensuring that every vote is collected and counted as the voter intended. A transparent recount can only have positive effects no matter what the outcome.Write Comment (1 Comments) |

The following letter was sent in response to an idea floated by Delegate Obie Patterson, Chair of the House Subcommittee on Elections, for two voting systems in each precinct -- one Diebold and one optical scan. After this letter was sent the House backed off considering this option.

Re: The Need for Fully Recountable Elections Means Touchscreen's Should Not Count Any of the Votes
Dear Delegate Patterson:
We are a newly formed cross partisan coalition of candidates focused on ensuring fully recountable elections in Maryland. We support HB 244/SB 713.
We are writing you and your colleagues today because there are reports your subcommittee is considering amending HB 244 to mandate a bifurcated system allowing optical scan and Diebold touchscreen in every precinct. In addition to increasing the cost and the training of poll workers, this system makes it impossible to fully recount the election. At best only a partial recount would be possible, and very likely no recount at all would take place.

Candidates Alliance for Recountable Elections
March 2, 2006
Linda Lamone Administrator, State Board of Elections 151 West Street, Suite 200 Annapolis, MD 21401
Dear Ms. Lamone:
As candidates for public office we are very concerned about the recent findings of the “Security Analysis of the Diebold AccuBasic Interpreter,” issued by the California Voting Systems Technology Advisory Board on February 14, 2006. (See: http://www.ss.ca.gov/elections/voting_systems/security_analysis_of_the_diebold_accubasic_interpreter.pdf ). The 38 page report makes a number of important findings that pose great concerns for the trustworthiness of voting in Maryland. In particular findings highlighted by TrueVoteMD.org seem to apply to Maryland's voting system, including: Write Comment (0 Comments) |
