Third-party candidate Kevin B. Zeese said yesterday his long-shot run for U.S. Senate in Maryland is gaining momentum because of gaffes by the Democratic nominee, Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin.
Mr. Zeese, the nominee of the Green, Libertarian and Populist parties, said Mr. Cardin "committed political suicide" by skipping a debate Thursday in Charles County sponsored by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
"He chose to offend a key voting block," Mr. Zeese told The Washington Times.

WALDORF - A Maryland senatorial debate hosted last night by the NAACP last night packed a church in Charles County, but had one noticeable absence: Rep. Ben Cardin, who canceled due to "scheduling problems." His absence gave Green Party candidate Kevin Zeese a chance to steal some of the spotlight, and Republican candidate Lt. Gov. Michael Steele an opportunity to stump his views unchallenged. But the debate was a quiet departure from a News Channel 8 debate on Wednesday, described my most media outlets as an angry clash among Cardin, Steele and Zeese.

Democratic Senate candidate Benjamin L. Cardin 's decision not to participate in an NAACP- sponsored debate in Charles County last night allowed critics to speculate that he was (a) avoiding another free-for-all (b) "running away from a debate" or (c) ceding a growing African American community to his Republican opponent, Michael S. Steele .

WALDORF, Md. - There was little disagreement in a Senate debate that didn't include the Democrat, Rep. Ben Cardin.
The other two candidates - Republican Lt. Gov. Michael Steele and independent candidate Kevin Zeese - spent more than an hour talking calmly Thursday night about immigration, the war in Iraq and Social Security. It was a sharp contrast from a televised debate the day before, when Steele, Zeese and Cardin bickered angrily for much of the forum.
