What do you want?

“If African Americans and labor announced they were open to a third party alternative, the death of the Democratic Party would be in sight and a real party of the people could take their place." (attributed to Kevin Zeese)

Wow. That's something to think about. Marylanders are at least uncomfortable and unhappy with the ever increasing gap between rich and poor, the degradation of our environment and the health of our children, the erosion of our rights, and the the weakening of our international credibility. And we are certainly nervous about the growing strength of multinational corporations in our economies and politics -- politicians of both major parties are taking their money and doing their bidding.

Obviously the independent parties speak to our discontent with how things are. The real question isn't whether they have ideas and energy to make our state and our nation better. The question many of us ask ourselves is whether they can someday win enough power to actually change things. The writer of that phrase asks us to imagine that change could happen.

Would you want it to?

Zeese takes first steps

There are days when I regret the fact I have a rule I (almost) never violate. I never check the home e-mail account when I’m at work, and I never check the work e-mail account when I’m at home.

Today is a day I should have been checking the home e-mail. For one, I caused a panic among some Greens with my incorrect post about John Eder. I think they are hanging me in effigy tonight for that one. The other reason I wished I would have checked is Kevin Zeese was kind enough to e-mail me with a scoop.

Meanwhile, a third-party candidate is trying the waters. Kevin Zeese formed an exploratory committee this week to seek to “unite multiple third parties behind a campaign for peace, justice and democracy.

“We need an economy for the people, where all Americans share the wealth and each has a stake in the sensible growth of our economy,” said Zeese. “Neither major party faces these issues because doing so is against the interests of the monied elite who fund their campaigns.”

An Interview With Kevin Zeese

Foxworth: Why are you considering running for office? And why a campaign with multiple parties?

Zeese: I'm considering running for the U.S. Senate because neither of the two major parties represent the interests of a majority of Americans. According to the June 17 New York Times, only 19% of people responding to a poll felt that Congress shared their priorities – so we need new voices that represent the peoples priorities. I'm running to represent multiple parties – a Unity Campaign – because we need to join together to challenge the two party system that is undermining American democracy and limiting voters choices. We need a vibrant democracy not an anemic one.

Candidacy Will Seek to Unite Multiple Third Parties Behind a Campaign for Peace, Justice and Democracy

Today, Kevin Zeese announced an Exploratory Committee for a likely U.S. Senate candidacy in Maryland. Zeese's entry into the race will make an already competitive race even more difficult to predict and brings a different perspective than the two major parties on critical issues of concern to Maryland voters. The Exploratory Committee includes people from the two major parties and the alternative parties as well as the anti-war, pro-democracy, environmental, and justice movements.

“Voters across the political spectrum are tired of partisan bickering. They want a candidate who will seek common sense solutions to problems we all share. This exploratory committee includes people from across the political spectrum. We will redraw the political landscape as the old configurations don't work. Voters want leaders who will fight for their interests, take action and apply sensible solutions to the many problems we face together, unburdened by the limits of the political parties,” said Zeese.
